Breaking the Fast

Breakfast made easy!

The Movin’ Together tools take a bite out of the incidence of cancer for those of us who use them!

Each Movin’ Together tool gives us an advantage and the Jumpstart Your Day/ Eating Breakfast tool is no exception! A typical breakfast contributes fiber and whole grains, which help prevent colorectal cancer according to the American Cancer Society.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month so we want to remind everyone to stay healthy and eat breakfast!

How do we make time for breakfast? Do it the night before! Soaked oatmeal: Takes about five minutes to prepare! Each person gets to build their own breakfast using the following model.

Combine all ingredients in a mason jar. Soak overnight in the refrigerator.
Stir in the morning and add more liquid if desired, eating cold or warm.
Just remember the 1:1 ratio. You will soak 1 part liquid with 1 part oats overnight. For example, if you use 1/2 cup oats, you will use 1/2 cup milk which can be dairy, nut or soy milk.

You may add any of the following ingredients to make it your own!
Sweetener: honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, raw sugar
Nuts: shredded coconut, slivered almonds, chopped walnuts or pecans
Seeds: chia, sesame
Fruit: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, raisins, cranberries
Spices: cinnamon, nutmeg

Why oats? Eating low-calorie foods that are high in nutrients can provide us with the nutrients that our bodies need while helping us lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, one cup of cooked oatmeal contains 166 calories, 5.94 g of protein, 4.00 g of dietary fiber, and 3.56 g of fat. Oatmeal is packed with soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad” cholesterol.

Steel cut oats are one type of oatmeal that is also great to cook the night before! Usually best if cooked overnight in a crockpot!

When In Doubt – Flush It Out

When In Doubt – Flush It Out

The mission of Movin’ Together is to encourage women of all ages to feel their best, be their best, look their best and do their best for others. Not to impress, but to bless! As we care for ourselves, we will have the energy we need to care for our family and friends.

This month’s healthy tool of hydration assists us in experiencing less stress! When we hydrate, the stress hormone called cortisol decreases in our bodies helping us to feel calmer. Even a little bit of dehydration can cause cortisol levels in the body to increase and lead to STRESS. Let’s make sure we drink enough water so our brains can balance their chemicals and we can be less stressed!

Giving

Giving

When we give our time and talents to others, we are filled with a sense of joy. During this season of giving, we are reminded how important it is to give even 10-15 minutes of our time to hear a person’s story, share some holiday traditions, and give a bit of encouragement. Today on Movin’ Together, we experienced the joy of spending time with residents from the Shared Home, as well as some furry friends from Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries. The residents enjoyed playing with the dogs, singing Christmas carols, and sharing stories of their love of animals.
